Summer Helpers Keep the Pace – Summer Jobs at Logent

What is it really like to have a summer job at Logent? Juho Jokinen and Visa Laakso are working this summer as extra support at Logent’s Tampere unit. Visa is back for his second summer. Last year he worked in packing, and this year he is on the shipping department and driving forklifts. Juho is new to Logent and this is his first summer, working in packing where finished products are prepared for loading. He also gets to perform final inspections to ensure everything is flawless.

– This summer, I’ve been working in the shipping department and driving forklifts, explains Visa. We receive information from the system about which items and products need to be shipped and where. Then we pick the products from the warehouse, attach labels and packing lists, and load them onto trucks or containers for onward transport. We also move goods from packing to the warehouse with forklifts, where they wait for picking and shipping.

– We work in two shifts, mornings and evenings, which alternate evenly. From a summer worker’s perspective, morning shifts are often preferable because evenings leave free time. The shifts start as early as six o’clock, so you still have plenty of time during the day for personal matters, says Juho.

– In the packing department, we rotate between different workstations during the day, which makes the work more varied than in shipping. Tasks are listed on the shift schedule, but sometimes assignments and timing change depending on need, he continues.

Orientation and Guidance

– Neither of us had prior experience in logistics, but that wasn’t a barrier to applying for or getting the summer job. At the start, we received a thorough orientation, following an experienced colleague while learning by watching and listening. After about two weeks, we started working more independently. I also got guidance on forklift operation here at Logent, says Visa.

– In packing, we usually work in pairs, with a more experienced colleague alongside. Rarely do you do a task entirely alone. It’s actually very helpful to have someone to ask for advice, since you constantly encounter new situations and learn along the way. Even small details you hadn’t noticed can affect efficiency. Everything was new at first, and it was challenging, but being able to learn and receive positive feedback on your work is very motivating, Juho adds.

– Summer workers were welcomed openly and on equal terms. That’s not always a given everywhere, says Juho.

Welcoming Summer Workers

– I’m here for my second summer. From day one, everyone treated us well and welcomed the summer workers. It was nice to meet familiar faces again, says Visa.

– We have a close-knit team here, and employees socialize even outside of work, which says a lot about the workplace culture. Summer workers were smoothly included in this tight group, which I think is important. It creates a positive feeling to come to work, adds Juho.

Work Atmosphere and Environment

– At Logent’s Tampere unit, the atmosphere is relaxed, and everyone enjoys each other’s company. Humor is always present, and the workday flows smoothly, says Visa.

– There is a relaxed vibe here, and all employees are respected. Summer workers were welcomed openly and equally, which is not always the case. We are trusted with responsibility and given opportunities to try different tasks and develop as employees. Constructive feedback and room to learn are also part of the culture. Logent has been a pleasant and developmental workplace, says Juho.

– I have nothing negative to say about summer work here. This is the best job I’ve had so far, Visa agrees.

Lessons Learned from the Summer Job

Practical experience from operational tasks is valuable, according to Visa.

After roughly three months of summer work, Juho and Visa are returning to university – Juho to Industrial Engineering and Visa to Mechanical Engineering. Both emphasize that gaining work experience is one of the main benefits of a summer job.

– Work experience itself is already important for the future. Practical experience in operational tasks is valuable, especially for future specialist roles, says Visa.

– It’s good to see and try different types of work. Communication and teamwork skills naturally develop while working. For me, these are important and valuable skills that I will benefit from in the future, lists Juho.
